1961

This town is named after a shopping center.

Until 1961 this was Delaware Township. That October the Cherry Hill Mall opened on a sixteen-acre farm off Route 38, the first enclosed, air-conditioned mall on the East Coast and the largest in the country at the time. People drove in from everywhere just to look at it.

The township liked it enough to hold a referendum and rename itself after it. The Post Office had suggested Deltown.

Which tells you most of what you need to know about doing business here. For sixty-five years this has been a place people go specifically to look at businesses. That's the local sport. It's also the local problem.

1961

The year it renamed itself after a mall

Kings Highway, Route 38, Haddonfield Road, Springdale, Barclay Farm. There's a stretch of Marlton Pike with Korean signage on half the storefronts. Whatever you do, somebody within four miles of you does it too, and they are probably good at it.

That's the honest situation. Over in Marlton you might be the only one on your street. Here you're one of a dozen, and all twelve of you have a sign.

What works here

Being good is table stakes. Being found is the job.

01

Show up when they search, not when they already know your name.

Word of mouth carries you right up until the referral looks you up and finds a Facebook page you last touched in 2019. In a town this dense that's exactly where you lose it.

02

Look like the one who's been here longest.

Fifty competitors and a customer who decides with their gut in about eight seconds. The business that looks established gets the call. That isn't fair. It's just what happens.

03

Make the next step obvious.

A phone number somebody has to hunt for is a phone number nobody dials. There's another option a mile up 70 and they both know it.

Every demo on this site is a working example, not a screenshot. Have a look at what your version could be.

Let's talk about your Cherry Hill business.

Tell me where you are and what you do. I'll tell you straight what I'd build and why. If you don't need a site, I'll say that too.
